Don’t you love it when you finally start doing the thing you’ve known you’ve needed to do?

After putting up a big fat zero in my first week, this past week I finally got on the board:

Week 02 number of words written: 939
Total number of words written to date: 939
How I’m feeling about it: Hopeful

I wrote the Introduction and the first part of Chapter 1

But man, it wasn’t easy to get going.

Having walked around with the idea for three years made me worried I wouldn’t be able to turn all that thinking into compelling words on a page. Yeah, I was getting in my head.

So I turned to a mental performance training tool, quite humbly. And it helped.

But enough about me…

This past week I was sitting with an important question:

Who am I really writing this book for?

While “Unlocking Marketing Leaders” is the working title, this book isn’t just for people with fancy titles.

In my book (pun intended or whatever) a marketing leader is anyone doing any form of real marketing leadership, regardless of title.

And then I’m tacking on this gem from Brene Brown:

“I define a leader as anyone who holds themselves responsible for finding the potential in people and processes and has the courage to develop that potential.“

In my experience, that’s often at least half the marketing team, not just someone at the top.

As I sat with that, I realized this broader definition has importance way beyond this little book I’m tinkering with.

It might be time for us to update the lens through which we see our fellow marketers.

We’re not always able to promote everybody, but we sure can recognize the leadership people demonstrate. All that leads to is more leadership. All upside.

And yeah, positive reinforcement is a real thing.

Anyway, more from the front lines of book writing week next week.

Thanks for riding with me.
